Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is the famous volcano that erupted in 79 AD, leading to the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It stands proudly dominating the city skyline and still poses danger of eruption as it is the only one in mainland Europe which has erupted in the past 100 years. A tour to Mount Vesuvius lets you climb to the summit and get a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding landscape.

The Ruins of Pompeii

Pompeii was the historic city that was buried by the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. If you are in Naples, then you cannot afford to miss the ruins of this famous city that still stands in a surprisingly good condition. The ruins offer a wonderful experience as you can walk through the Temple of Jupiter, the Temple of Apollo, the case del Fauno and the Amphitheatre.

The Ruins of Herculaneum

Like the city of Pompeii, Herculaneum was another city that was completely destroyed by the destructive eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The ruins are in a better condition as compared to those in Pompeii because there are some frames, roofing and wooden structures here that are still intact. The interesting sights here include the House of Argus and the Villa of Papyri, which have some stunning frescos and wall paintings.

Castel Nuovo

Another destination that you must visit in Naples is the Castel Nuovo, which stands as an imposing structure and is amongst the first sights that can be seen while entering the city via the sea route. The castle dates back to 1282 and has five circular crenulated towers along with a magnificent triumphal arch which was constructed later. You can walk through the castle and also feast on some stunning views of the Naples harbor from the ramparts.

Naples National Archeological Museum

The Naples National Archeological Museum lies in an ornate building which was built in the 1750’s. It is home to an extensive collection of artefacts from the Roman and Greek periods along with some more from Pompeii and Herculaneum. There are even some mummified remains from Egypt that you can see here.

Besides these wonderful tourist attractions, Naples is also famous for its restaurants, cafes and craft shops. Ask around from the locals and find the best one to taste the special delicacies and pick some souvenirs. Do not forget to take a ferry or a boat to the island of Capri that is located in close vicinity.
